CAF have announced a technical study group for the ongoing 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), taking place across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, www.aclsports.com reports.
The TSG is made up of respected coaches, former players, and instructors with a proven track record in African football and beyond. Leading the cast is Senegal’s Pape Bouna Thiaw, who led his country to CHAN glory in the previous edition held in Algeria. Thiaw guided his Senegal team to a thrilling victory over hosts Algeria in the final, winning in a dramatic penalty shootout before being named Best Coach of the Tournament.
As a member of FIFA’s Technical Study Group, he contributed his expertise during the FIFA U-17 World Cup held in Indonesia in 2022. Now serving as Senegal’s head coach since December 2024, Thiaw returns to the CHAN tournament in a different capacity—offering technical insight as part of CAF’s Technical Study Group, just a year after leading his nation to glory in the same competition.
Joining Thiaw are other esteemed figures from across the continent: Mark Fish, a CAF AFCON 1996 winner with South Africa, brings a wealth of international experience and a strong focus on player psychology, leadership, and youth development. Meanwhile, there is also João Cláudio De Almeida “Miller” Gomes, a seasoned Angolan coach with experience leading youth and senior national teams.
Others include Kamel Kolsi, former Tunisian international and U-20 coach, Walter Steenbok, former Technical Director of the South African Football Association, as well as Mohamed Magassouba, former head coach of Mali and DR Congo with more than 30 years of coaching experience at the highest level.
The TSG will be responsible for delivering comprehensive analyses of tactical patterns, player displays, and coaching strategies observed throughout the tournament. Their insights will be published on cafonline.com, helping to ensure that CHAN’s impact continues well beyond the tournament’s conclusion.
