Bayelsa Queens sent a strong warning to their WAFU Zone B rivals on Monday, July 21, as the reigning NWFL champions turned Lagos into their playground with back-to-back wins in a friendly double-header at the iconic Maracana Stadium www.aclsports.com reports.
The Prosperity Girls kicked off the day in style, breezing past Team Lagos with a commanding 4–0 victory. Alaba Olabiyi broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, but it was Alaba Olabiyi who stole the spotlight. The in-form striker bagged a quickfire brace (63’, 65’) that left the Lagos defence chasing shadows. Bankole Sofiat then wrapped things up late on to cap a dominant performance.
If the first game was ruthless, the second was simply a spectacle.
Facing a WAFA Selected side later in the afternoon, Bayelsa Queens put on an attacking masterclass, thrashing their opponents 6–1. Once again, Essien lit the fuse with the opener in the 19th minute. Janet Akekoromowei and Shakirat Moshood joined the party with goals in the 23rd and 33rd minutes respectively, before Blessing Ilivieda made it four just before halftime.
WAFA managed a consolation through Mariah Ajayi in the 61st minute, but it barely made a dent in Bayelsa’s confidence. Moshood wasn’t done either, she added her second and the team’s sixth in the 79th minute, sealing an emphatic rout.
The two wins in Lagos add to an already impressive run of form in pre-WAFU tune-ups, where they also defeated Unification Ladies FC 0–2 and recorded a 2–1 comeback win over Sunshine Queens in Akure.
With 10 goals scored and just one conceded in a single day, Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda’s side are clearly not here to make up the numbers. The message is loud and clear: Bayelsa Queens mean business ahead of the WAFU qualifiers.
And with the attacking players in red-hot form, defences across West Africa have been put on notice.
With preparations now hitting top gear, Bayelsa Queens will return to Yenagoa to fine-tune final details ahead of their departure for the WAFU Zone B Qualifiers, where only one ticket to the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League awaits.
Momentum is clearly on their side. The goals are flowing, the squad depth is showing, and belief in Whyte Ogbonda’s system is growing by the day.
If these friendlies are anything to go by, the Prosperity Girls won’t just be participating in the qualifiers, they’ll be aiming to dominate.
West Africa, take note: It looks like Bayelsa Queens are locked in and ready to roar.
