0ver 200 athletes will battle for honours at the 4th edition of the Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship which started at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Gymnasium, National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

The Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship will be making its return after three years of absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic with 27 States indicating interest.

According to Francis Orbih, President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, players will be playing for a total of 5.4 million naira prize money and ranking points to improve their national ranking with the finals and closing ceremony billed for Saturday the 2nd December, 2023.

Orbih said, “The National ranking will be major criteria for inviting players to the national camp early January next year to select the National team for the two major continental events in the first quarter of next year.

“These are the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Egypt in February and the 2023 Africa Games scheduled for Ghana in March”.

Orbih who could not hide his excitement promised to look at other possible meets to “keep the players calendar crowded”, as he pledged years ago before being elected to his first term in office as President.

Meanwhile, players, administrators and technical officials are all excited with anticipation especially after a long draught of such outings.

Before the 3 year break, the Championship had become one of the biggest national badminton events in Nigeria.
