Nigeria number one badminton player, Anu Opeyori is targeting Gold at the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Port Harcourt starting from Monday April 22 to Sunday April 28, 2019.
Nigeria will be hosting the event for the first time in 19 years at the Alfred Diete Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt.
Speaking to www.aclsports.com Opeyori wants nothing less than a Gold medal in the singles and doubles event.
“I have given so much to bring nothing less than Gold for team Nigeria. If there was another medal that is worth more than gold medal I would love to go for it,” Opeyori said.
“The training has been great in a very conducive environment and I am satisfied with how well I have trained. I am ready for next week.
The Africa number two player is also looking forward to becoming the continent’s top player in the short run.
“That is one of my goals and I want to achieve that as soon as possible. I need to participate in more tournaments all around the globe that is the best way to achieve the title.
“I am number 2 in Africa and the highest ranked player is from Mauritius so everyone is looking forward to beating him at the championship. Winning the Gold medal is my own focus and not on him.
Opeyori is confident he and his doubles partner, Godwin Olofua will win Gold in the doubles event.
“My doubles pair, Godwin and I are the highest ranked in Africa now currently we are Africa’s number 1. It has been wonderful playing with him and staying consistent in the event. I am sure with the form we are in at the moment, we will be victorious in this tournament,” said Opeyori.
Opeyori won the men’s singles event at the Rivers Governor National Badminton Championship in December and followed it up with a win in the men’s doubles event at Uganda International in February.
