Former champions Rivers United were dumped out of Nigeria’s oldest cup competition AITEO Cup in the biggest upset of the round of 64 matches decided on Wednesday.

Playing at home at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, United who at a stage this season campaigned in CAF Confederation Cup bowed out to Julius Atete FC on penalties. Atete, a team in Nigeria’s 3rd tier football division held Rivers scoreless for ninety minutes before winning 7-6 in the shoot out.

Both teams converted their first five spot kicks before Abraham Ovmiomoduwho converted after Rivers left back Zoumana Doumbia hit the cross bar with his attempt.

2014 Champions Enyimba also bowed out on Wednesday to fellow Premier League side ABS, a team they trashed 3-0 in the league on Sunday. Samuel Oyedeji’s early penalty and Abubakar Chindo’s header condemned Enyimba to an early elimination.
