Lookman beat Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams to the night’s biggest prize.

Lookman is the second consecutive Nigerian to claim the award after Victor Osimhen in 2023. It is the first time Nigeria has had back-to-back winners in the Men’s award since Nwankwo Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997) were honoured almost three decades ago.

The 27-year-old was the clear favourite to win the award for the first time in his career after a 2023-24 season for Atalanta and Nigeria. He played a key role in helping La Dea win the first European trophy in their history with a memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

On the international scene, Lookman was named in the team of the tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, scoring three goals as the Super Eagles finished as runners-up to the hosts in February. In addition, he was the only African on this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, finishing 14th.

Following another outstanding year for club and country, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie claimed the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second year in a row. Her performances for French side Paris FC earned her the Première Ligue Goalkeeper of the Season award for 2023-24. In addition, Nigeria’s Women National Team claimed the National team of the year.

The glittering ceremony was attended by football royalty from the continent and beyond in a celebration of the incredible growth and development of the game in Africa, and the astonishing strides that have been made in men’s and women’s football in recent years.
