2018 AYG: Nigeria bags Gold in volleyball

The Nigeria male team on Tuesday claimed the 2018 Boys Youth African Games title in Algiers, Algeria.This is Nigeria first volleyball title since the Africa Young Games began in 2003.

Nigeria overcame Egypt 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 14-25, 16-14) in Ain Taya Hall. With the victory, Nigeria has qualified for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Iran.

Earlier, the Tunisia boys took on hosts Algeria 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-14) in the bronze medal match. Tunisia concluded the competition in the third place leaving Algeria in the fourth place.

The President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Eng Musa Nimrod said,“Today we made history by winning gold in the African Youths games in Algiers; I wish to express my uttermost gratitude to the whole Nigeria volleyball community, both home and in Diaspora”.

Nimrod also commended the technical crew and players who poured their hearts to achieve the great feat.

Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Agera Champion won Bronze medal in 10m Air Rifle Men Junior with a total of 4,713 shots; while Tosin Oribamise also settled for a bronze medal in the Table Tennis women’s event.

Nigeria lost 0-2 to Ghana in the Women’s Quarterfinals of the Hockey event at the Africa Youth Games.
