Team Nigeria wrestlers have won three medals consisting of one silver and two bronze medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Africa silver medallist, Blessing Onyebuchi narrowly lost to Canada’s Erica Wiebe in the Women’s 76kg final, settling for a silver medal. The former Commonwealth bronze medallist had eight strong contenders in her weight class.

Bose Samuel

In the Women’s 53kg weight class, African Champion Bose Samuel defeated Sri Lanka Deepika Mudiyanselage 10-0 points via fall to win the 53kg bronze medal, while Canada’s Diana Helen Weicker beat returning champion Kumari Babita of India 5-2 to win gold.

The second bronze medal came from Africa silver medalist, Welson Ebikewenimo who avenged his loss at the 2018 African championships over Jan Louwrens Combrinck of South Africa 5-2 in the men’s 57kg.

The win makes it Ebikewenimo’s third Commonwealth Games medal.

Meanwhile, Aware Rahul of India defeated Takahashi Steven of Canada to win gold in the 57kg

Assizecourt Ebimienfaghe is the only Nigerian wrestler who failed to secure a medal on Thursday as he lost to Wales’ Dodge Curtis by fall. The Welsh wrestler trailed 8-0 earlier before zooming off with the bronze medal in the 74kg.

After the bouts, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung was sighted celebrating with the country’s bronze medallist in the Women’s 53kg, Bose Samuel.
