Team Nigeria defeat South Africa at Africa Badminton C’Ships

Team Nigeria won all five categories of their first team event beating South Africa 5-0 at the 2019 All Africa Senior Badminton Championships which started in Port Harcourt, on Monday.

In the Men’s Singles, Africa number 2 Anuoluwapo Opeyori beat Ruan Snyman 21-10, 21-14 while number one ranked player in Africa in the Women’s Singles, Dorcas Adesokan defeated Johanita Scholtz 21-13, 21-15.

In the Men’s Doubles, the pair of Opeyori and Godwin Olofua routed Bogani Von Bodenstein and Jared Elliot 21-16, 21-17, while the duo of Deborah Ukeh and Dorcas Adesokan were 21-19, 21-14 winners over Elme De Villiers and Butler-Emmet in the Women’s Doubles.

In the Mixed Doubles, Enejoh Abah and Peace Orji defeated Bongani von Badenstein and Michelle Butler-Emmet 21-15, 21-10.

Adesokan was elated to defeat the South Africans in the Women’s Doubles.

“Everything we learnt in training we have been able to put it to practice during games. We are so happy the match went well.”

“They are the Women’s Doubles champion, the number one in Africa. We are glad to even beat them because they are very tough. It is a good start for us and we are going for the Gold and to win the tournament,” said Adesokan.

In other games played, Ghana beat Cote d’Ivoire 5-0, Algeria beat Togo 5-0 Mauritius defeated Benin Republic 5-0 while Egypt beat DR Congo 5-0.

Games continue on Tuesday in the Africa Mixed Team Championship; Zambia will take on Benin Republic, Uganda will play DR Congo, Algeria play Coted’Ivoire, Ghana will be up against Togo while Zimbabwe will face South Africa in the Africa Mixed Team Championship.
