Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has suffered a hamstring injury that could see him miss Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers in September, www.aclsports.com reports.
Ajayi, who just moved to Championship side Hull City in the summer, has been battling injuries in recent times, and it appears he will be spending some weeks on the sidelines.
The 31-year-old first suffered a hamstring tear in November while still with West Bromwich Albion. The setback resurfaced in February during his rehabilitation, stalling his progress. Although he managed to regain full fitness before the season ended, his recurring injury troubles ultimately led the club’s management to decide against extending his contract.
The 2023 AFCON star was superb at the back in Hull City’s goalless draw against Coventry City last Saturday, and felt some discomfort in his hamstring after the game.
According to a report from Hull Daily Mail, the defender is set to be sidelined for four to six weeks while recovering from yet another hamstring injury.
Ajayi’s injury is a major setback for the Tigers and Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, as it sidelines one of his most reliable defenders ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers. Although Chelle still has William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey to call upon, Ajayi remains an important member of the squad.
Nigeria will face Rwanda and South Africa in September, as they hope to stage a comeback in the World Cup qualifiers ahead of the final round of matches in October.
