Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has unveiled a 25-man squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, www.aclsports.com reports.
Sudan, who are in the same group as Nigeria’s Super Eagles, have named a strong squad featuring 13 players from domestic champions Al-Hilal Khartoum. Notable inclusions from the club are goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Fateh and midfield general Mohamed Al-Rasheed. Players from Hay Al-Wadi Nyala and Al-Amal Atbara complete the diverse lineup, with one representative each.
Appiah, a former Ghana national team boss who led the Black Stars at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is spearheading Sudan’s football resurgence amidst national unrest. He has already qualified them to the AFCON in Morocco, and he will be hoping he can make a statement in the competition on his debut.
The East African nation previously made CHAN appearances in 2011—where they achieved a historic third-place finish on home soil—and in 2018 (third as well), but they failed to reach the knockout stages in the last edition in Algeria.
The announcement follows the conclusion of the Sudan Premier League and Super Cup. The national team is set to regroup immediately and will travel to Zanzibar on July 30 for a final training camp before the tournament begins on August 2.
The Falcons of Jediane, who are making their fourth appearance in the tournament, will face Congo Brazzaville in their opening game, before a key matchup against Nigeria – a repeat of the semifinal in 2018, and a potential decider against defending champions Senegal in their final group game.
