Simona Halep glad to win first grand slam in Paris

Current World number one Simona Halep won her first grand slam title against American 10th seed Sloane Stephens in three sets 3-6 6-4 6-1 to emerge 2018 French Open champion.

Halep who had lost in two previous French Open finals to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and Jelena Ostapenko in 2017; and this year’s Australian Open final to Caroline Wozniacki had to stage a come back after going a set and a break down in Paris.

During her victory speech the 26 year-old Romanian said: “Last year it was tough to talk because I lost this match, but now it’s really emotional to talk as the winner. I wanted this trophy to be here in France.

“I have been dreaming of this moment since I was 14 and I’m glad it happened in Paris,” the World number one said.
