Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali hopes to play at the World Cup following the experience at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, www.aclsports.com reports.
The Chippa United shot-stopper, who is part of the team preparing in Uyo for the World Cup Qualifier against South Africa on Friday, shared his thoughts on the upcoming fixture, the World Cup, and many more.
“This is a different game entirely,” Nwabali began to NFF Media.
“The first was a knockout game at the AFCON, while this is for qualifiers. The win at the AFCON gives us another motivation to play against them [South Africa] on Friday.”
Nwabali made his competitive debut for Nigeria at the AFCON but he will be playing in front of the home support for the first time on Friday night and he is looking forward to it.
“It is going to be a great game for me and them all. I really wish to play in front of them and playing this kind of game will bring a lot of energy and motivation to do very well.
On the current position of the Super Eagles on the standings, Nwabali believes there is no pressure but they are working hard to get the campaign back on track.
“There is no pressure. We will pick one game at a time, try to put ourselves together, and try to win the game before moving to our next game against Benin Republic in Ivory Coast. So, it is not about putting us under pressure because it is another game we will play to see if we can get to the World Cup. So, there is no pressure but the players are working hard and pushing.
On playing at the World Cup, Nwabali wants to have a taste of it.
“It is going to be a great feeling and my CV. I wish to play at the World Cup. I enjoyed that atmosphere at the AFCON, so I want to taste the World Cup experience as well.
Super Eagles of Nigeria, who are winless in their group, need only a win against the South Africans to get things back on the right path. Friday’s game at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo has been scheduled to kick off by 8pm.
