Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leaders Akwa United edged second placed Nasarawa United 2-1 on Thursday to stay top and more importantly extend their lead at the top of the table to four points.

The Promise Keepers started the game knowing that a win would guarantee their top position at least for two more match days and did just that courtesy of two first half goals at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

Playing without three of their key players away with the national team in the US, Akwa United however did the business in the first half of the game. Winger Samuel Amadi gave them the lead with a well-taken free kick on the half hour mark.

The Promise Keepers then doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time when midfielder Marshall Johnson glanced home Etboy Akpan’s free kick.

Nasarawa United halved the deficit 13 minutes from time from the penalty spot through Adamu Hassan but Kennedy Boboye’s Akwa United held on for the important win.

In the day’s other game decided at the same venue earlier, Akwa’s local rivals Dakkada FC spanked Kwara United 2-0.

Godwin Inamoto gave the hosts the lead in first half stoppage time before Emmanuel Charles made the game safe five minutes from time when he headed home Uwana Asuquo’s cross.

Match Day 31 matches in the league will be held on Sunday across different venues in the country.
