Yobe Desert Stars have gained promotion to the top flight of Nigerian league, Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after a 2-0 victory over Adamawa United on Wednesday.

The Mustapha Audu-led side needed maximum points on the final day of the league season to make sure of promotion and they did just that with a first half winner in Damaturu. They will join Northern Conference winners Kwara United in the top flight next season.

Having already ensured promotion, Kwara United lost at home to FC Taraba 1-2 on the final day, a result that ensured Taraba escaped relegation.

In the top of the table clash in Owerri, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the hero as Go Round FC drew goalless at leaders Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. Nwabali saved a 75th minute penalty by Francis Momoh to keep his side in second place and eight points still behind the leaders.

Third placed Bayelsa United ensured that status quo remains after a hard earned 1-1 draw at Akwa Starlets. Samuel Akinbinu had given the Restoration Boys the lead but Utibe Archibong scored from the penalty spot five minutes from time to give the hosts a share of the spoil.

In other results, Osun United beat First Bank 3-1 in Osogbo while UNICEM Rovers pipped Crown FC 1-0 in Calabar. Osun United 3-1 First Bank
