Nigerian wrestlers begin campaign at the World Championship today

The female category of the 2017 World Wrestling Championships begins today as Nigeria wrestlers know their opponents.

Paris, France the venue of this year’s championship is already lit up with explosive matches from the just concluded Greco-Roman category which ended yesterday.

The weigh in of the 55kg, 58kg, 63kg and 75kg categories were done on yesterday.

The most experienced Nigerian wrestler in the competition, Blessing Oborududu battles Mallory Velte of USA and must win in order to move to the next round of the 63kg which has 22 wrestlers.

The seven-times African champion may face either Bulgaria’s T. Yusein or Kazakhstan’s Kanangarayev Z. in the second round.

All eyes will be in the 55kg category which has the first ever female world number one wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye with 24 competitors.

Adekuoroye will slug it out with Mathilde Riviere of France who competed at the 2017 PAN who competed at the 2017 PAN American Championships.

Another challenger in the 55kg category is Titiyana Kit of Sweden.

Lastly in the 58kg weight category, 2014 Commonwealth gold medalist, Aminat Adeniyi meets Grace Bullen of Norway.

African champion Marwi Amri of Tunisia is already in the next round of the World Championship.

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, said his expectations from the wrestlers is for them to give their best efforts.

The World Champion and 2000 Sydney Olympic Gold medalist said he’ll be assisting Purity Akuh at the corner.

“My expectation of them is to give their best effort. That’s all. No pressure from me” Igali told ACLSports.com.

“I’ve been here before and I know what it feels like to be at a World Championship. This is like a World Cup in the football setting. All I’ll do is to assist the coach and to be on the corner where the wrestlers can see me and wrestle with their body, mind and soul,” he added.

Amas Daniel, John Emmanuel and Mercy Genesis have all arrived Lutte, Paris the venue of the 2017 World Wrestling Championships in France.
