Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, gave a man-of-the-match performance in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in an international friendly game on Friday night, www.aclsports.com reports.
Eric Chelle’s side went behind through Semi Ajayi’s own goal just before the half-hour mark. Only for substitute Tolu Arokodare to grab an equalizer for Nigeria in the second-half to ensure the spoils were shared.
The Malian tactician made changes to the squad following the Unity Cup triumph in London, as the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were welcomed to the starting XI. In goal, Maduka Okoye replaced Stanley Nwabali who was also unavailable.
Nigeria started the game well, but couldn’t create enough chances in the opening quarter of the game. By the time the hosts grew into the game, they got behind the Nigerian defence and Semi Ajayi unfortunately turned the ball into his own net. The Russians continued to enjoy good spell of ball possession until the break at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
After the break, Chelle withdrew the ineffective Victor Boniface for Tolu Arokodare. The Genk man added some energy and presence to the Nigerian attack, and he scored just ten minutes later. Tolu pounced on a poor pass from goalkeeper Matvey Safonov before calmly slotting past the PSG man for the leveller.
Nigeria were under immense pressure after going on level terms, but thanks to goalkeeper Maduka. The Udinese man, who was last in goal for Nigeria in November 2024, made brilliant stops to keep the Super Eagles in the game, and ensure Eric Chelle extends his unbeaten run as head coach.
Chelle and the boys will not meet again until September when the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers resume. The Super Eagles have games against Rwanda and South Africa as qualification hangs in the balance.
