Port Harcourt based Rivers Angels and Yenagoa based Bayelsa Queens continue to assert themselves as the best women’s clubs in Nigeria….

Eight-time Women’s Federation Cup (Fed Cup) champions Rivers Angels will face Bayelsa Queens in the 2023 Women’s final after both sides scaled tough hurdles in the semi-final on Friday.

Playing at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, Rivers Angels defeated Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 courtesy of two goals – one in each half – by Nigeria Under 20 forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.

Okwuchukwu benefitted from a mistake by Amazons defender Joy Duru inside the box to plant home a header in the 3rd minute to put Edwin Okon’s Angels in front.

Amazons drew level in the 27th minute through Tanum Dooshima who beat Angels goalkeeper Charlotte Adjei from point blank range but Okwuchukwu restored Angels’ lead in the 64th minute when she tapped home a rebound after Amazons goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma fumbled Sofia Agyaakwa’s freekick delivery.

The goal turned out to be the winner for Rivers Angels who will now compete their ninth Fed Cup final against bitter rivals Bayelsa Queens who defeated Edo Queens 1-0 in a contentious match in Awka on Friday.

Rivers Angels have won each of their eight previous finals but will face a stern test in Domo Okara’s Bayelsa Queens who represented Nigeria at last year’s CAF Women’s Champions League. The last time both teams met in a Cup final, Rivers Angels edged it on penalty shootout – in 2016

No date nor venue has been announced yet for the final by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) but it is expected to be after the Men and Women’s Super Six tournaments next month.

Men’s quarter final matches will be decided on Sunday as follow:

Bendel Insurance (Edo) Vs Sunshine Stars (Ondo) – Awka – 28/05/23 – 4pm

Warri Wolves (Delta) Vs Lobi Stars (Benue) – Ijebu-Ode – 28/05/23 – 4pm

Plateau United (Plateau) Vs Kwara United (Kwara) – Abuja Area 3 – 28/05/23 – 4pm

Rangers Int’l (Enugu) Vs Doma United (Gombe) – Akure – 28/05/23 – 4pm
