New Benfica of Portugal signing, Tyronne Ebuehi made his competitive debut for Nigeria at the Volgograd Arena in a vital World Cup match against Iceland.

“It was a nice feeling coming on” the former ADO Den Hag full back said to www.aclsports.com after the game. Ebuehi is a rare breed of natural full backs but most have known him as a right back or right wing-back. He however replaced Brian Idowu at left wing-back “I was comfortable playing there as I have played in that role a few times for my club so it is nothing new. To be honest I will play in any position for my country at the World Cup”.

Ebuehi’s big day was nearly ruined after he gave away the penalty. “I knew it was a penalty even before the referee went to check the VAR. I arrived late and caught the Iceland forward but thankfully they missed”.

With this cap at the World Cup there is no longer any chance of Ebuehi being enticed by Holland – the country of his birth. “There was even no chance before now” the young defender smiled.

Ebuehi has always been part of the Super Eagles second half revivals so what is usually said at half time? “I had no idea what was said this time” he says laughing. “I was outside doing my warm up with the fitness coach getting ready to come on. I am just pleased it worked.

I’ve always wondered why reserve players never get into the tunnel after the first half but go for warm ups. How then do they get to be part of the the team talk?
