Rivers United secured their first point in this season’s CAF Champions League following a goalless draw with Zambian side Power Dynamos on Saturday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Having lost to Pyramids and RS Berkane in their first two matches, getting a result against the Zambians became paramount for Finidi George’s side, and they managed to do just that.
Following his error in the last continental game, goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya returned to start between the sticks for the Pride of Rivers. Boluwaji Sholumade also got the nod in midfield alongside Seyi Oguntayo, while Maclyn Biokpo was selected to lead the attack.
Rivers United struggled in the opening half of the game, with goalkeeper Onisodumeya and some strong defending from Stephen Manyo keeping them in the game. The goalkeeper made three strong saves as the Nigerians went into the break without a shot on target at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
After the interval, the hosts continued to push for the lead, but the Nigerians stayed resolute at the back, and goalkeeper Onisodumeya continued to keep Finidi George’s side in the game.
Time and time again, the former Bayelsa United goalkeeper made big saves to keep his side in the game. At the other end, the visitors had their first shot on target in the 68th minute when goalkeeper Willard Mwanza pushed Friday Ubong’s effort away. Both teams eventually shared the spoils in a goalless draw, earning their first point of the tournament, as Dynamos’ wait for a first goal in the CAFCL continues.
After the trip to Ndola in Zambia, Rivers United will now return to Nigeria to host the return leg in a match-day four clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next weekend.
