Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo delivered her best outing yet in the WNBA, scoring a career-high 14 points as the Dallas Wings fell 101–95 to the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
On a seven-day hardship contract, the forward came off the bench and made the most of her minutes, contributing one rebound, two assists, two steals and a block while converting 50 percent of her attempts from the floor.
Her performance was a bright spot for a Dallas side stretched thin by injuries and late scratches. The absence of key players proved costly: All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale remains sidelined with knee tendonitis, while top draft pick Paige Bueckers was ruled out late due to illness.
The Wings had five players in double figures, led by Odyssey Sims with 22 points. Myisha Hines-Allen provided 18 off the bench, Maddy Siegrist scored 15, while Haley Jones added 12. Okonkwo’s 14 rounded out the group, a timely contribution that underlined her ability to step up when called upon.
Despite shooting 50.7 percent from the field, Dallas could not overcome their deficit at the foul line, where they were outscored by 14 points.
Connecticut, meanwhile, leaned on youth and experience. Rookie Leïla Lacan matched her career-high with 22 points, and veteran Tina Charles scored 18, including a decisive hook shot in the final seconds that sealed the win for the Sun.
Okonkwo’s showing highlighted the quality that made her a two-time AfroBasket MVP, proving her game translates to the WNBA. In just limited minutes, she gave Dallas a preview of the difference-maker she could become.
