Nigeria weightlifter, Abayomi Adeyemi told www.aclsports.com that weightlifting runs in the DNA of his family.
Abayomi Adeyemi won one silver and two bronze medals in the -102kg men’s weightlifting event at the recently concluded 13th African Games in Ghana.
Adeyemi revealed that his father has been supportive since he ventured into weightlifting adding that his father was a former weightlifter.
He said, “My father was a weightlifter and he is also my coach. I told him I wanted to venture into the sport and he gave me a good nod. For me, weightlifting is not a dangerous sport but a family game; there is nothing spectacular because my father is my pillar”.
Recounting his successes at the 13th African Games, Adeyemi revealed that his plan was to win one bronze medal but he ended up winning three medals for Nigeria.
He said the injury sustained before the Games could not stop him from making the country proud.
The African Games silver medallist said, “I feel excited because this is my first international medal and second international outing. It has not been easy but all thanks to God for his mercies. Along the journey, I got injured and it healed before the 13th African Games in Ghana. With all the injury, I was able to make it to the podium and return home with medals. I want to also thank the President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Dr Ibrahim Abdul for his contributions to weightlifting in the country.
“Before coming to the African Games, I prayed to get one bronze due to my injury but God took all the glory and I won three medals consisting of one silver and two bronze medals; I am happy God worked in my favour”, he told www.aclsports.com
“My aim is to prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Australia and set a New Record because my record at the African Games is below par. During training, I always lift more weight but had to reduce it because I did not want to force myself”.
