Senegalese referee Issa Sy has been handed the task of officiating Saturday’s AFCON quarter-final encounter between Algeria and Nigeria at Grande Stade de Marrakesh, www.aclsports.com reports.
41-year-old Sy will be assisted by compatriots Djibril Camara and Nouha Bangoura as first and second assistant referees, respectively, with Kenya’s Peter Waweru appointed as the fourth official. Meanwhile, Gilbert Cheruiyot Kipkoech is the reserve assistant referee.
In the VAR room, Pierre Atcho leads the other cast of Stephen Yiembe (Kenya), Antonella Viana (Swaziland), while Moroccan Yahya Hadqa will serve as the referee assessor.
It is the second successive AFCON quarterfinal game of Nigeria that the Senegalese will take charge after handling the clash between the Super Eagles and Angola in Abidjan two years ago.
At this tournament in Morocco, he served as the VAR in the game between Nigeria and Tunisia, where Bright Osayi-Samuel was penalized for handball in the penalty box. Despite a late foray of attacks from the Carthage Eagles, Nigeria managed to secure the win in Fes.
Meanwhile, Saturday’s match between Algeria and Nigeria, which will commence at 5pm (local time/Nigeria time), is a repeat of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, which the Algerians won on their way to becoming continental champions in Egypt.
