Nigeria men senior national team, the Super Eagles drew 0-0 with fellow 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier Zimbabwe in a pre-tournament friendly decided at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Saturday.

Saturday’s game served as a valedictory encounter for the three-time African champions who will travel to Egypt on Sunday ahead of their campaign in Group of the competition which starts on June 21 in Cairo.

Captain John Mikel Obi featured for the first time in close to a year while Villarreal youngster Samuel Chukwueze and Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu also returned to the starting lineup.

It was a game of few chances and Paul Onuachu should have put Nigeria in front in the fifth minute but he shot into the side met after he was put clean through on goal by Alex Iwobi.

Chukwueze was lively down the right flank and he was denied in the 16th minute by goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda after a lovely footwork and shot by the left footed player. Kalu also tried his luck twice from the other flank but hit his effort over on two different occasions.

There were also no goals in the second half in spite of advances by both sides. Chukwueze saw his effort wide and over while Jamilu Collins was denied by a point blank save by the Zimbabwean substitute goalkeeper.

Nigeria will play one more friendly game; against Senegal when they get to Egypt while Zimbabwe have a date with Tanzania before the tournament starts.
