Athletics: Ajayi wins 200m and 400m races, Isah sets record

2018 Commonwealth Bronze medalist Yinka Ajayi won double title in the 200 and 400 metres at the Making of Champions (MoC) Grand Prix and Relays held at Yaba College of Technology.

The Kogi born athlete won the women’s 200 meters in 23.53 seconds ahead of Mercy Ntia-Obong while Ajayi won the 400 metres in 52.08 seconds ahead of Rita Ossai, who finished in 54.40 seconds and Ifunanya Muoghalu in 54.88 seconds.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Arowolo also won double titles in the 100 and 200 meters.

Arowolo won the men’s 100 meters in 10.25 seconds ahead of Jerry Jakpa , who also clocked the same time. But in the 200 m, the former Junior champion was well ahead of Jakpa as he took the title in 21.03 seconds while Jakpa was second in 21.13 seconds.

Ntia-Obong won the women’s 100 m in 11.24 seconds ahead of Joy Udo-Gabriel, who finished in 11.48 seconds, and Blessing Ogundiran, running 11.63 seconds.

National champion Glory Nathaniel won the women’s 400 m hurdles in 57.56 seconds while Joy Abu finished second in 59.60 seconds.

Ifeanyi Ojeli won the men’ s 400 m in 47.47 seconds ahead of Daniel Atilaya in 47. 53 seconds and Jare Folarin , who finished in 47.61 seconds.

In the field events , Esther Isah set a new personal best of 1.82 meters as she won the women’s high jump title while Benjamin Arinze won the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.91 meters.

National record holder, Queen Obisesan won the women’s hammer with a distance of 63.70 m while Omizi Sofiat 53.51 meters in second position while Feyisayo Daramola with 51.53 meters came third.
