Onyenezide Esther was the hero as FC Robo narrowly defeated Adamawa Queens 1-0 at the National stadium, Surulere on Wednesday.

Onyenezide scored the decisive goal six minutes after the hour mark to hand her side their first win of the 2018 National Women’s Football League,  NWFL, season.

Both teams came into the game looking for their first goal and win, after playing goalless draws in their opening games.

However, it was the hosts who started on the front foot, led by last season’s joint top scorer, Rasheedat Ajibade.

Robo dominated the first half, coming close to breaking the deadlock on numerous occasions through Rasheedat, but met a resolute Queens defense.

The home side continued to ask questions of Queens back line and nearly found an answer just before the half-hour mark following a superb counter attack.

But Queens defense once again was alert to clear Ndubuisi Esther’s goal bound effort off the line.

Moments before the break, the home side came close again, this time via Oladipo Shukurat, whose shot from range stings Queens’s goalkeeper, Ademola, before the goalkeeper calmly saves on the second time of asking.

A dominant performance from the home side, but Queens defended well to ensure it remained level at the break.

After the break, Robo continued from where they stopped, but despite their dominance on the ball, there was still nothing to show for it.

With his side lacking ideas in the final third, manager, Emmanuel Osahon made a tactical substitution as Esther came on for Shukurat.

Few minutes later, Esther made her impact felt, as she reacted quickest to a defensive mix up to put Robo ahead.

It was Robo’s first goal of the season, and they held on for the win and all three points.
