The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) is making a strong call for corporate sponsorship to help propel the nation’s elite weightlifters to the global stage.

In a recent interview with www.aclsports.com, Dr Ibrahim Abdul, the President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, shared his vision for the future of Nigerian weightlifting.

With a strong tradition of producing athletes with immense potential, Abdul believes that with the right support, Nigerian weightlifters will continue to dominate international championships and win medals at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“Our athletes have the talent and determination to compete at the highest levels,” Abdul said. “However, they need the right resources—training facilities, international exposure, and financial support to fully realize their potential. Corporate sponsorship is the key to ensuring our athletes have everything they need to succeed.”

According to Abdul, limited funding, lack of access to proper equipment, and insufficient financial means to travel to international competitions often prevent athletes from performing at their best, despite their hard work and dedication.

“Corporate sponsorship will take the financial burden off both the athletes and the federation. When businesses step in to support our athletes, it allows us to focus on what truly matters: training, competing and winning. It’s a partnership that benefits everyone, as it ensures our athletes can compete at the highest level and, ultimately, bring home medals for Nigeria.”

The President emphasized that weightlifting is not just about individual glory, but also about national pride. He firmly believes that corporate support will not only elevate the athletes but also shine a spotlight on Nigerian sports as a whole.

“We are looking for forward-thinking companies that are ready to invest in the future of Nigeria’s athletes. Sponsorship is a long-term investment, not just in the athlete, but in the growth of Nigerian sports and the international reputation of corporate sponsors.”

“If we want to see more Nigerian weightlifters winning gold at international championships, we need sustained investment in their development. Corporate sponsorship will provide the necessary foundation for our athletes to succeed.”

Dr Abdul remains hopeful that the sport will undergo a transformation that will elevate it to new heights, leading to a steady stream of national champions.

“We have the talent; we have the determination. Now, we need the support. Together, we can build a legacy of champions who will make Nigeria proud on the global stage.”
