Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, has been voted Fulham’s Player of the Season for 2024/25, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 25-year-old, who finished second in his debut campaign last year, has gone one better this time around, comfortably coming out on top of the final round of voting as the Cottagers’ best performer in the just concluded season.
As announced on the Premier League club’s website, Calvin Bassey (39.6%) came first with compatriot Alex Iwobi (21.5%) in distant second. Antonee Robinson (19.9%), goalkeeper Bernd Leno (10.9%) and Saša Lukić (8.1%) finished behind the Nigerians respectively.
Bassey, who could play at left-back and left center-back, was a dependable figure at the back for Fulham. He featured in 35 Premjer League games as the club went on to secure a record points haul.
The Nigerian’s pace, strength and confidence in bringing the ball out of defence a key component in that succes.
At the other of the pitch, the former Ajax star scored two vital goals – the winner at home to high-flying Nottingham Forest, and the opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the famous Emirates FA Cup win.
“Thank you guys for voting me Player of the Season,” Bassey said via the club’s website. “I want to thank God – without God I wouldn’t be where I am. Big up all my team, guys who are not necessarily at the Club, who have been helping me.
“Obviously, thanks to the coaching staff and the Manager for trusting me and believing in me. Hopefully we can do amazing things next season, so thank you for your support guys,” Bassey concluded.
Having missed the Unity Cup, Bassey, who was a regular at the last Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria, will be hoping to continue his recent found form in the World Cup Qualifiers in September and October before the AFCON in Morocco.
