EXCLUSIVE Squash: Three Nigerians zoom into finals at the Zimbabwe Championship

Team Nigeria trio, Sodiq Taiwo, Olanrewaju Abdulraman and Yemisi Olatunji have all qualify for the final of the 2017 Safeguard Zimbabwe Squash Open.

Sodiq Taiwo will face fellow compatriot, Olanrewaju Abdulraman in a much anticipated final while Yemisi will battle Zimbabwe’s Yvonne Mabure for the gold medal.

The Finals will be played on Sunday with the Men’s 3rd n 4th match, followed by Doubles, Veterans, Ladies and men events.

Nigeria number two player, Sadiq on his way to the final beat Zambia’s number one, Manda Chilambwe 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

Also, Nigeria number two, Olanrewaju survives a scare in a tightly contested match beating Zambia’s Frank Wabo 8-11, 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 to make it an all Nigerian final.

Yemisi Olatunji who is ranked number in Nigeria, beat Zambia number one, Sharon Chimfwembe 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 enroute the final.


In the quarter finals, Sodiq humbled Enos Male of Zambia by 11-6 and 11-4 before the Zambia player retired in the 3rd set.

Preston Mhongo of Zambia was beaten by golden boy, Olanrewaju Abdulraman, 6-11, 5-11, 12-10, and 5 – 11 also in the quarter finals.

In the doubles event, Sodiq and Olanrewaju placed third beating Dash Vaghmaria and Kalpesh Parsonage 11-4, 11-8, 11-9 after they lost against Matthew Mulaji and Janeel Giga 5-11, 5-11, 11-8, 9-11 in the Semifinals.

Meanwhile, Busayo Olatunji finished 5th and Oladunni Okikiola 7th in the 16 ladies group.
