Champions League: Onyekuru, Idowu set for battle

Nigerian trio of forward, Henry Onyekuru, defenders, Bryan Idowu and Chidozie, will begin their 2018/2019 UEFA Champions journey battling each other following the draw for the group stages on Thursday.

Idowu’s Lokomotiv Moscow, who were one of the seeded teams, will face Onyekuru’s Galatasaray and Chidozie’s Porto, 2004 winners of the competition.

The three will battle it out after their teams were drawn against each other in Group D at the draws held in Monaco.

Idowu left Amkar Perm for Lokomotiv this summer, while Onyekuru was asked by his parent club, Everton, to continue his development on loan at Turkish side, Galatasaray pending when he is given a work permit.

The other team in the group is Bundesliga representative Schalke 04.

Elsewhere, another Nigerian, little known Dennis Bonaventure will be leading his Belgian side, Club Brugge in the CL, albeit in a difficult group.

Brugge were drawn in Group A against UEFA Europa League and Super Cup winners, Atletico Madrid, alongside German outfit, Borussia Dortmund, AS Monaco of France.

Tyronne Ebuehi’s Benfica were pitted against German champions, Bayern Munich, Dutch team, Ajax Amsterdam and AEK Athens from Greece.

Meanwhile, Champions League defending champions, will begin their post-Cristiano Ronaldo title defence in Group G, with Serie A side, AS Roma, CSKA Moscow and Plzen.
