The round of 32 matches for the women’s Aiteo Cup competition has just been concluded with Lagos based FC Robo defeating Delta Queens to progress to the next round of the competition.

The match which kicked off at 3pm Nigerian time was played at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere. As expected, the home team started the match the brighter of both sides as Uchegbu Chidinma almost gave them the lead on the 25th min via a corner kick.

The home team kept pushing and their effort was later rewarded in the 50th minute as FC Robo Captain, Ndubisi Esther volleyed home into the top corner from the edge of the box past the Delta Queen, keeper in goal as she wheeled away in celebration. The home team almost made it two goals to the good in less than a minute after the first goal during a goal mouth scramble in Delta Queens defence but the ball was however cleared to safety.

Goalscorer and captain of the home team, Ndubisi Esther then sustained what seemed to be an injury after going down awkwardly under a challenge but she soon returned to the pitch after receiving treatment. Few minutes later, she went down on the turf clutching her leg and seemed like she would be unable to continue as she was stretchered off the pitch. To everyone’s surprise, she was soon back on the pitch limping as she eventually saw out the game. ‘It is not a knee injury. It’s just a muscle problem I had while playing today,’ she said.

Expressing her delight for the goal and win she said: “I give glory to God and I am very happy because it is not easy. It is just God because we never expected to get this far. So I give all the glory and honour to God who saw us through this round.”

FC Robo will have to wait for the draws of the next round to find out who they play next as they hope to win the 2017 women’s Aiteo Cup competition.
